CalvinB's TechBlogSuperior Security Systems
Great free security software that I use.

Keeping your computer secure is imparitave, therefore, I have compiled a list of essential programs and tools that are absolutly necessary for optimum computer security. First, it doesn't matter wether you are an average home user who is rarely online or a buisness executive carrying sensitive information for your billion dollar company on your laptop. This is security for everyone, and everything I have listed here is free. All of the following programs work with both XP and Vista, I know this because I use them at home.

Anti-Virus Software: When it comes to this critical computer component, I fully reccomend AVG Free. It is a great program developed by Grisoft. There are only a few qualms: it does not contain anti-rootkit protection, and you must update manually. Other than that this program is the best free software out there. It also includes a really neat feature, Safe Search. This pre-scans websites listed in popular search engines, and alets you if any of them are found to be a security risk, might be a problem, are totally safe, or will fill your computer with so much viruses that it hops of your desk, runs outside, and shoots itself in the face.

Anti-Malware Protection: Anti-Virus software scans are notoriously long, so for extremely basic, everyday, computer protection, users need a much more light app that can search for bad shit quickly in the background while they continue to surf sites such as 'viruses.net' and 'fuckupmycomp.org.' The program that can do this for you, I have found, is... Lavasoft Ad-Aware Free. You must update manually and it does not offer real time protection, but then again 'real time' protection isn't always what it's hyped up to be. Also, Windows Defender (included in Windows) is a good second line of defence.

Document Security: First: Whenever you delete a file it is still on your hard drive! The computer changes some of the hex digits of the name so the file doesn't appear in Explorer or the Command Line. Eventually, the computer will completely overwrite this when the space is needed, but depending on how big your hard drive is, that could take anywhere from five minutes to five years. If someone wants to, they could find the so called 'deleted file' and recover it. If you are a buisness user with sensitive files, you need to permanently delete these files. There is a program that does this, it is called CyberShredder. This program gives you the option of 3 deletion options. The normal option uses the NSA-approved seven pass deletion method. What it does is takes the data in your file and changes it to a bunch of random useless shit. Second: hard drive encryption. This is self explanitory. The open source program TrueCrypt allows you to do what drive encryption is supposed to do, encrypt your hard drive. TrueCrypt is feature packed and an essential security download for any user with ultra-sensitive files.

Other Useful Goodness: Javacool's SpywareBlaster is one of the best things I have ever seen. It is such a light program, it doesn't even need to run! What it does is takes a list of known sites that contain virues, and puts them on IEs 'Restricted Sites' list. It also stops spyware and tracking cookies, and prevents known ActiveX problems from downloading. Also compatable with FireFox. On the subject of FireFox, Mozilla's FireFox is a great browser, because it is just as good (if not much better) than IE, as there are much less viruses and exploits out for it. Finally, if you are sketched out about a file you downloaded it, upload it to Jotti's Online Malware Scan. This site runs your file through several different program's scanners and reports back to you on if it's infected.

In conclusion, using common sense is probably the best security software out there, and it comes pre-loaded and full-featured in your brain for free. Other than that, use my above tips. If you know of more useful programs, please PM me! Thank you.
